Bella’s Cancer Surgery

Hi everyone. My name is Tania and I am hoping to help raise some money to support the medical costs involved with my niece Bella’s upcoming cancer surgery.

Bella is just 16 and has been through the absolute ringer with her health over the last three years. She has just been diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid Cancer and will undergo a full thyroidectomy on June 30, before the possibility of radiation treatment.

While the prognosis is very good and the family very positive, this comes after much stress and frustration trying to get to the bottom of her complex health issues.

Hashimoto’s, POTS, insulin resistance, are just a few of the battles Belle has been enduring. New medications, trialing dosages, immune rashes, unable to attend school, unable to now work her casual job, unable to sit her driver’s licence, unable to do her debutante ball. All the things a 16-year-old should simply take as given.

And with all of this, the medical

bills continue to pile up. Private health insurance doesn’t seem to cover much these days and my brother and his wife are just like the rest of us, working hard and trying to make ends meet.

We were raised in a family where you don’t put your hand out, it’s not the done thing. So it takes a lot to acknowledge that costs associated with Bella’s upcoming surgery are steep and impactful.

We are a small family and a close family and we will do everything to support Bella and Pat and Syndi and Holly as they go on this journey, but unfortunately I can’t wave a magic wand and pay their bills.

The surgery out of pocket expenses of the excess, anaesthesiologist, surgeon’s fees, scans, hospital stay will amount to approximately $5000.

I wish I had the spare cash just to alleviate having to worry about this part of it. But I don’t. What I do have is so much love for my brother and his family and Bella is my spirit animal - robust and proud and determined and righteous and stubborn as all hell!

I want to allow my family to simply concentrate on Belle’s health, and not have to check their bank account before swiping their card to pay for critical treatment.

Health should not come at a cost. Healthcare should not only be available to those who can afford it.

Believe me when I say it goes against the grain for this deeply staunch family to ask anyone for anything, let alone monetary support.

So I’ll do it instead! Every cent will count and I would be ever so grateful if you could put yourself in their shoes for even five minutes and consider how you’d feel. The last thing you would want to be worried about is money.
