From Motel to Home: A Family's Journey

Hello, my name is Johnnie and I'm a Department Manager for a local family owned pest control company. I've had dozens of people come and go in my 20 years, but the story I share today has truly struck a chord unlike any I've ever encountered in the past. I recently hired a man in his early 30s with a wife and child (18 months old) who told me during his interview that he was currently living in a motel and doing any work he could find just to survive and eat, but no one would give him a decent paying job because of his past. Turns out that he only stays in a motel a few nights per week if he has the extra money available, and they sleep in his car the rest of the time. I've helped several of my employees in the past when times were hard, just as I've had to be helped when I was in need. Every time I helped, I did so knowing I would likely never see a return and those people quickly disappeared from my life. This time something was different. The only thing in return I've ever asked when I help these employees is what every manager asks from all their employees; show up on time, learn the job I'm asking you to do, take care of my customers and I'll help anyone to get back on their feet however I can. This man truly wants to build a future and life for himself and his family despite his past. He has done everything I've asked and more, but I am currently at my limit on what i'm able to do for him. What he needs more than anything is an affordable place to live, but we all know that cost is astronomical to everyone. So I sat and thought about the best ways for him to find an affordable temporary place to stay while saving up for a more permanent solution. Ultimately, I would like to find a cheap enclosed camper that may need a little bit of work and a place to put that camper near our office with water and electricity for a few months to get them out of sleeping in motels and the car, and into a place they can afford temporarily until that more permanent option is available to them. After the time is done, my plan would be to sell back the camper and donate to a charity or to the local Children's Hospital. Thank you if you've read this far. I've always believed that the good we show others when they are at their lowest reflects our truest nature of ourselves and that those who give the most are the one's with the least amount of resources available to them.
