A DESIRE FOR INDEPENDENCE AGAIN!!!

Hi everyone! I'm Philicia and thanks for visiting my page!

In 2010, I had a fall, which altered my ability to walk. This fall immediately led to walking very strangely, then shortly thereafter walking with a walker and ultimately needing Spinal Cord Surgery.

On July 5, 2011, I had spinal surgery on my T3 and Lumbar area. After surgery, I was suppose to recover in 5 days and begin walking. Unfortunately, this didn't occur. I was left paralyzed from the waist down.

This fight to return to a normal life has been very difficult. I'm caught in a situation that affects a very small population of people. Because I had to stop working early in my adult life and didn't fall in the categories of autism, blindness, elderly or adolescenthood, there aren't many organizations, grants or funds, which can assist me. I don't qualify for any type of help from the government.

I'm seeking funds to live an independent life again. I would like to raise $50,000. The funds will go towards a mechanism added to my wheelchair to make it a Standing Wheelchair ($22,000) as well as an electric Patient Lift System ($28,000). My medical insurance does not cover the costs of the standing wheelchair and lift system.

A Standing Wheelchair helps a person with mild to severe spinal cord injury. It would allow me to raise the wheelchair from a seated to a standing position. The health benefits from a Standing Wheelchair are improved circulation, urinary/bowel function health and retaining bone density. It would improve my overall quality of life and provide independence.

My home is an older model and has a very small bathroom. I can’t access my bathroom with a wheelchair. Also, I have an air pressure bed, which makes bed transfers impossible. This results in hiring Caregiving Services for 1 hour a day which runs over $1,000 per month. This cost is difficult to maintain when you are on a fixed & limited income. I would love to care for myself again without the aid of a caregiver - because it takes away your dignity, pride and self-worth when you're dependent on others. A Patient Lift makes it possible to get in and out of bed and utilize the bathroom without assistance. It helps achieve the highest level of independence possible, almost totally eliminating Caregiving Services.

I am committed to getting better, being independent and making a difference to help others with the same circumstances.

Thank you in advance for your financial support!!!
