Life After an Earthquake

Donation protected
Hello everyone,

My name is Maya. I was born in Japan, lived in Arizona for years, and now am far from all family in the Netherlands. My mom's entire side of the family lives in Japan; she is the only one from her side to live in the United States. A large portion of the family in Japan lives in Kumamoto, which was hit by a series of large earthquakes last week.

Luckily each of my family members are accounted for and safe. However, the house that our family has lived in for years and years--the house that I remember spending a large part of my childhood in--the house that my sweet 92-year-old grandmother watched generations of us grow up in, has suffered severe damage from the earthquakes, and is un-livable right now. My grandmother, my aunt, two of my cousins, my cousin-in-law, and 4 kids (soon to be 5 kids) live in this house. After several nights of sleeping in their cars, they have a temporary place to stay, but is far too small for the growing family to stay in long term. They will need to either face a tremendous bill to completely repair the house, or will need to start over and find a new home. This part is still unclear...

Being so far from Japan (all the way in Arizona, and myself, in the Netherlands) the rest of my family feels so helpless. We weren't able to deliver water or food, or give them a temporary place to rest their heads at night. Rather, they were left sleeping in their cars in an open lot and having to hunt down water stations. By using GoFundMe, we hope to raise some money that will aide in the cost of home repairs, or the cost of starting over in a new home.

I want so badly to know that my fragile grandmother can safely rest her head at night, that my already hard-working aunt has a lessened burden, and that my cousin's young children are not scared. The goal is to raise $5,000 within two weeks so that they may have some financial assistance in home repairs or finding a new home. It may be a stretch, but it's worth a shot. We would be so grateful for any amount of help we can send to my family in Japan. My mom has been appointed to collect the money raised and will send it to our family once the 2 week timeline is done. I will do my best to keep everyone updated once there is more information whether the house is salvageable or not.

Thank you to everyone in advance. If you can, please pass this along to your friends and family. Anything helps.

Much love,
The Janousek Family
