GSDs (German Shepherd Dogs) in Need Australia Inc is Australia's largest German Shepherd Rescue and we are a registered charity and we are based in Logan in South East Qld.
We take the German Shepherds who fail assessments at pounds and shelters throughout Australia for medical and behavioural reasons from pounds and shelters throughout Australia including RSPCA Qld, RSPCA NSW, RSPCA SA, AWLQ to name and pounds as far away as WA.
We have proven that these neglected and abused German Shepherds can be rehabilitated - all it takes is time.
In 2015 we took the massive step of leasing our own kennels which has proven to be hugely successful in terms of rehabilitation and proving a sanctuary and loving environment for seniors who nobody wants and ensuring they receive the best of care.
What we are not successful at is raising funds to keep the rescue open.
Our vet bills average $1000 a week. We have rent, electricity, water, food and tick and flea and worming treatments making our costs $17,000 a month.
I the Founder of GSDs in Need work a minimum of 70 hours a week unpaid in the kennels and have had one day off since 23 November 2015. My house is up as security in order to lease the kennels and will continue to be up as security after I have left.
Due to bullying and harassment of the very worst kind I have stepped down as President but am continuing to work here unpaid to ensure our dogs receive the best of care and that there is someone on site 24/7.
So why does such a large amount of money need to be raised?
Recently we have had two dogs come in that require thousands of dollars of vet care.
Little Gerti is ten months old but is the size of a four month old puppy due to being starved - even worse she had an embedded chain leaving her with a head tilt and we need to do X-rays and an MRI to ensure she does not have permanent damage - estimated costs $4000.
Shaggy joined us from the pound who said he had bad hips - but on arrival it was not his hips - he needs surgery on both cruciates - estimated costs $8000 if done at the Specialist Centre.
These bills are in addition to our normal running costs and vet bills.
With me the Founder leaving due to harassment that has gone on for many months I will need to be replaced by paid staff as I have only been able to take one day off as we do not have enough coverage with other volunteers.
For those who feel helping with paid staff does not help the dogs - if we do not start having paid staff there will be no-one to care for our beloved rescue dogs.
German Shepherds are misunderstood, often stigmatised and it is hard to find sponsors as they do not want to be associated with an "aggressive" breed.
If you love German Shepherds help us to help them. We struggle from month to month and donations are dramatically down.
Our followers on Facebook suggested we do a Go Fund Me campaign and we hope with all our hearts we can reach enough German Shepherd lovers as we are currently the ones in need of rescue.
