Cynthia Whitlow was diagnosed with a Staph (MSSA) infection In her entire spine From neck (cervical) to tailbone (beyond the lumbar spine).
It is called an abscess (pocket – rather large – of infection). The neuro-surgeon said, “In my 40 years of practice, I have never seen nor heard of anything like this.”
They are all calling her a miracle. I guess it is because she has survived. It is suspected that it started with a staph infection on her chin (really bad pimples, is how she described it). Her white blood count went from 16.5 on Sunday afternoon to 46 right before surgery on Wednesday morning.
They are working on her ability to use her arms and hands at this point. Until she can form a circle with her thumb and index finger, she cannot hold things (like a cup). She is using Utensils, with large rubber sleeves on the handles (like a large crayon or pencil that a child would use) to feed herself. She uses a scoop on the plate to keep the Food from going off the plate when pushing the fork or spoon.
She needs additional surgery, because her cervical (neck) and lumber (lower spine) incisions are both necrotic (dead tissue) and suspected of being bed sores. She Is unable to hold herself up without considerable assistance, when doing any type of occupational or physical therapy. She is still on a trachea and feeding tube.
The trachea is still required to provide breathing support and she will have to undergo several weeks for removal, once they start, to make sure that her esophagus
Will not collapse. The feeding tube must remain in for 5 – 8 weeks after she starts eating, and as long as she has active infection, in case it is required for emergency
Procedures or for additional support.
As of now she is paralyzd and will need 24/7 care.
My mom is 49 years old and walked into the hospital (9/13/15 )with neck pain and back pain and is now paralyzed we are all stunned. We need prayer and support. Her first few medical bills have arrived and already over 95k . If you are called to help us....please please do so.
