Help MetroMun World get to WorldMUN

“PA’LANTE ES PA’LLA!”

This Venezuelan saying roughly translates, in a very colloquial manner: if you want to go forward you must keep ahead.

It might not make much grammatical sense, but growing up in Venezuela means hearing this phrase in any context that may seem troubling. A parent tells his kid when he falls off his bike while learning, to keep at it, and not look back to the past. This phrase sums up how Venezuelans are raised, we always keep going.

What is WorldMUN?

MUN conferences are diplomacy competitions in which students from all around the world act as representatives of different countries, organizations or characters in order to reach consensus over different matters that affect our globe. During MUN conferences culture, political ideals and knowledge are exchanged while working together to achieve beneficial solutions. Participating in WorldMUN symbolizes an excellent opportunity for Venezuelan students to take more pride on our country. We understand the importance of harmony between nations and how dialogue and negotiation plays a fundamental key to achieve conflict resolution.

Students rigorously selected to represent our country will acquire incomparable skills in a context full of academic excellence and cultural exchange that promotes personal and proficient growth as integral professionals and, certainly, a generation of leaders.

Who are we?

MetroMUN World (MMW) is a team of students from Universidad Metropolitana (UNIMET) that represent our country – Venezuela – at the biggest MUN conference in the globe: The Harvard World Model United Nations. Also known as WorldMUN, this competition welcomes over 2,000 delegates from the most prestigious universities of 150 different countries every year, therefore proving to be one of the most challenging occasions of the year. Every year, WorldMUN’s venue shifts through Continents, guaranteeing cultural exchange to its participants. The 2018 edition will be held on March, in the city of Panama.

Last year, the first generation of our delegation competed at WorldMUN in Montreal, having 100% efficiency in results and bringing back home the delegation award known as WorldMUN Spirit. This coming year we expect to continue our brief, but impressive legacy, with 18 delegates that comprise MetroMUN World’s delegation. From June 2017 until the conference our team will undertake an intensive academic preparation process to ensure our outstanding performance in the conference. Our Faculty Advisors will focus our training in public speaking, negotiation, leadership, competitive debates, teamwork, English language fluency and conflict resolution capacity.

Why we need your help:

Since April 2017, our country has been facing the most difficult political, economic and social crisis of its history. People search garbage bags to find food, medicine is next to impossible to find, protestors are killed in the streets. Our people is currently not subjects to Human Rights. As Venezuelans, we understand the topics we will discuss in these conferences more than most delegates. We live with the struggle of not knowing what freedom is like. We know what the International Community is able to do to protect the citizens of the World.

Living in the country with the highest inflation rate is not easy. Every salary paid is devalued by the minute, and the government does not understand how to maintain a balanced economy by constantly raising minimum wage and worsening our economic situation. At $8 a month for any working person in Venezuela, basic needs like bread, milk and medicines have become luxuries many must live with out.

Consequently, the only way we, as a team, can set feet on Panamanian soil is fundamentally thanks to kind donors that help us to cover transportation, stay and conference fees.

We believe that our country will rise again, that we will be able to bring joy, knowledge and freedom to our fellow Venezuelans. We strongly believe that during crisis, the wise build bridges and the foolish build dams. Guided by the proven fact that knowledge is the best investment, we intensely put our hopes in the valuable results that will be obtained by the 18 young men and women who have dedicated their time and effort to this project.

We will not despair in the face of disappointment and obstruction that Venezuelans are daily faced with. We will find a way to make our nation shine for what it truly is: an amazing place with the most amazing people.
