M.E.’s Broken Bones & Bills

During roller derby practice I was blocking during a jam and my feet got twisted beneath me. I heard and felt a crack and knew something was wrong. My teammates held my hands as the ambulance came and took me to the hospital. We soon found out that my ankle had been dislocated and I had a broken shin and ankle bone in 3 places, requiring emergency surgery. 20 minutes before I was taken back for surgery the next morning, I was told that the hospital was actually out of network, but that I truly needed to have the surgery asap. We went ahead with what should have been a 2-hour surgery, but turned into 5 hours once I was cut open and they saw that it was more severe than the x rays showed. My husband and I went home from the hospital the following day, and my kids came back from my parents’ house the day after that.
While in the hospital I was told that I most likely won’t be able to return to work this year. I’m a special education teacher and love my job and my kids, but need to prioritize my physical and mental health. I recently found out that I don’t have short term disability and don’t qualify for FMLA, so I will be without a paycheck for the rest of this school year, on top of trying to cover building medical bills that are going to be coming in for some time.
My family and I appreciate any help. Any funds collected will be put towards supplementing any income that I’ve lost. My daughter is 7 (going on 14) and my son is almost 4, and my husband has now been put into a situation where he is taking care of all of us the best he can. We don’t like to ask for help but this injury has put us in a difficult situation.
Thank you for reading and considering helping my family out.
