Mery's Story:
My name is Mery, I’m Brazilian and am 45 years old. I used to be a very healthy person, I have always eaten properly, exercised regularly and been a very hard worker.
In 2011, I met my boyfriend and it was a happy time in my life. He moved in with me and in 2012 I got pregnant. However I had a miscarriage. Like most women, I wanted to be a MOTHER but the doctor told me I had to wait to get pregnant. Time passed by and i got pregnant . I was very happy, and Thiago was born on July 17th 2013. He was a very health and cute little boy!
After my son was born, I went back to my normal life; working, exercising, etc. On January 2014 I had my check up and everything was normal.
For some reason my belly did not decrease in size, but I was told it would take some time to get back in shape. Well, in 2015 I skipped my check up, then In September of the same year, my belly looked like I was pregnant again. In addition, I started having heartburn and stomach pain. I went to gastroentorologist. I had a blood test and ultrasound and the exam showed my uterus was very large and my doctor sent me an OBGYN doctor. I had another image exam and they couldn't see my ovaries, and my doctor told me I had stage 4 of ovarian cancer which was spreading. I had to travel an hour and a half to Niteroi city (Rio de Janeiro) to get my chemotherapy for 5 days a week for 7 months. Luckily, my belly decreased significantly. On June 30th 2016, I underwent surgery. The doctor told me besides the ovarian cancer, I also had peritoneum, appendix, uterus, and fallopian tube cancer. I had my last session of chemo and I was in remission and every 2 months I had to take blood exams and MRI’s. I started getting better, taking care of my son and i was enjoying life once again. this is where my son’s story begins..
Thiago’s Story:
Begining of August 2016 Thiago started having cold symptoms. He started drooling a lot, choking and wasn’t speaking clearly. I took Thiago to the pediatrician who referred him to the ENT Specialist. The ENT doctor required a face ultrasound exam and it detected that his adenoids were 95% enlarged. He needed surgery very badly. A week after that, Thiago started losing movement of his right hand and right leg. I took him to the children hospital (Pronto Rio) in downtown Rio de Janeiro and they did a tomography exam that showed a mass in his brain. This hospital wasn’t completely equipped for his case. So, on November 2016, the doctors made an agreement to have him transferred to Quinta D’Or hospital (Rio de Janeiro) that would attend his needs.
As soon as he got there, they did an MRI and they told me that my only son was diagnosed with an intrinsic encephalic trunk glioma and the only treatment was radiotherapy. On the first two days of being hospitalized, Thiago chocked on his own saliva. In addition, he had a terrible asthma attack and he lost conscious. Doctors did a tracheostomy very fast to save him. After that, he was in coma for a month. The doctor found that my son had accumulated liquid in his brain, and he needed surgery that consisted of putting a valve to drain the diastolic fluid straight into his spine. He did the surgery sucessfully and waited for the stitches to heal in order to start his radiotherapy. Thiago did radiotherapy 5 days a week for 2 1/2 months. The tumor decreased and on February 13th 2016 doctors sent him home.
Thiago had a home care provider 24/7 which showed a great progress with physical and speech therapy. Thiago was recovering on his walking, playing with his toys, almost like a healthy kid.
With all our problems i still look out for my health because my son needs me.
In May 2017, my blood test came with alteration, and my oncologist asked for stomach MRI and the resulted showed a liver tumor. Then my doctor asked for a CT scan, and I did on June 15th. On Sunday June 18th Thiago started showing the same symptoms again. So, we took him to the ER in my small city and Thiago had to go back to the Quinta D’Or hospital. I had to open a process against my health insurance in order to transfer my son to Rio again the judge intervened to make it happen. Finally, on June 23rd they did transfer us to the Quinta D’Or, and more exams were required. On June 26th 2017 my results came and showed a liver tumor, and the membrane that covers the liver, abdominal cave, intestine, peritoneum, mammary area is all cancerous. I’m thankful to God I can do chemotherapy again. At this point, my son was still hospitalized and on the 28th of June doctors told me that Thiago’s brain tumor grew again. The group of doctors are talking about doing a radio therapy that is weaker and not so intense. In order to do this radiation Thiago needs to be sedated for him to do this. Right now Thiago is still in the Quinta D’or and we are waiting to hear what the doctors have decided to do and on top of that he seems to be getting weaker everyday.; He cannot breath correctly and its very hard for him. Doctors are doing tests to see why he is having trouble breathing, is it another affect of the tumor or is it something else?
I can’t work right now, and I need go to Niteroi to do my treatment 5 days of week. while I’m doing my chemo i need someone to stay with my son. I need private transportation and i do need all the help and prayers i can get.
This situation is very urgent. We need all the help we can get in a very little amount of time. We do not know when or how long we have with Thiago.
Thanks very much for your help !!!
