After years of multiple visits to emergency rooms for abdominal pain, she was finally given the medical consideration she deserved and was ordered a scan that showed a severe infection that needed immediate attention. Surgery was required as soon as possible to avoid an imminently life-threatening situation. The only hospital available was out of her insurance network because the others had no room due to covid. Although this would prove to be financially devastating, Merrick had no choice. Doctors requested letters, hours have been spent communicating with her insurance provider, and still, the costs keep piling up no matter the effort. She is trying her best to keep her head above water while still awaiting another surgery and drowning under this unfortunate medical debt.
