Mentee turned Mentor

For my birthday I'm raising money to benefit Ngorli Organization, and any donation will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me.

Today I want to reach out to my family, my friends and the whole world to help me raise some funds to help with a nonprofit organization that I work with and also to help me initiate a project that will help young African American men to visit Ghana, Africa where they can find their inner peace and reevaluate their life and purpose in like just like I did.

This is my story:

“One of the greatest values of mentors is the ability to see ahead what others cannot see and to help them navigate a course to their destination.”  My journey to Ghana came about when I went with my mentor to help him with nonprofit projects in Ghana.

I began to reflect upon this trip as I prepared to leave California to Accra, Ghana what I called the “Peace Land -the origination of my roots. Conflicting thoughts infiltrated my mind concerning Africa because of what I heard and read about the continent.

Upon arriving in Ghana, I was made a mentor, I went from a mentee to a mentor and that has changed my life. I was supposed to mentor 10 children but as I type, I have over 30 children that I am responsible for till I leave back to California.

Life as I knew it was a luxury and then I was able to see what a blessing I had living in the USA. I am mentoring these children to read and engage in sports and they are grateful but I am more than grateful because in the process of guiding them they are changing my life and my perspective about everything has changed.

For the first in life in Ghana I walk freely and stress free, I am loved and I want to do more here and when I get back to America. Please help me reach my goal and your donation will help with the following project:

Kissehman Library Project:

Currently the Kissehman Library project needs a face lift and with your help both parent and children can acquire the habit of reading which is important to the transformation of their community and Ghana as a whole. The reason why I want to be part of this project is because until I came to Ghana reading wasn’t my habit but I have seen the importance of reading and it need to be promoted anywhere in the world. These are some of my reason why you should support this library project:

1.       Reading is important because it develops the mind. The mind is a muscle. It needs exercise. Understanding the written word is one way the mind grows in its ability. Teaching young children to read helps them develop their language skills. It also helps them learn to listen.

2.       Reading is fundamental to functioning in today's society. There are many adults who cannot read well enough to understand the instructions on a medicine bottle. That is a scary thought - especially for their children.

3.       Though English is the official language for Ghana its not the language used at home hence children are confused between languages and needs the proper structure. The library will help them.

 Ryan Homecoming Project

The importance of young African American men coming home to Africa to reset is long overdue. I am fortunate to make this trip but there are millions who can not afford or will not make it a priority to make it to Africa. It my vision to encourage and educate them on the importance of travelling to Ghana and why, I will like to help some of them with funds raise to visit Africa and this is some of my reasons:

1.       Traveling: is the best way to get out of your comfort zone and invites you to experience life in different ways. To some young black men, the comfort zone is a danger zone. I would love my peers to experience what I went through.

2.       Judgment Free Zone: I was loved by many if not all in Ghana and this is what every young African American male needs at this point in America where we are looked different and judged from distance.

3.       Roots: they are the stories that ground you, the food that returns you, the music that comforts you, and the people who know you. Everyone has roots that influence them, even if they don’t consciously know them or can’t access them. I was connected to my root and I would love for every young man to get this connection.

4.       Its in our nature as people to lead and when we don’t have the right platform to lead we turn to be bad influence to our peers or our younger ones. Been a mentee and a mentor at the same time is something transforming because you relearn yourself.

What your donation will be used for:

1.       Your donations will be used to buy books for the library. There are a lot of Ghanaian writers whose writing can influence the minds of the younger once due to their experience in the country.

2.       Shipping of books to Ghana, books drive in the USA for the Kissehman Library project can only be successful if it can be shipped to the Ghana to the library in Kissehman, Accra-Ghana.

3.       Furniture and other equipment and electronics for the library.

4.       Educational and Campaign programs for young men in America to take the trip to Ghana.

5.       Provide resources and help to young men who cannot afford the trip to take the trip to Ghana.

Thank for donating to my fundraiser!
