Mental Health Support for the Black Community

Donation protected

In the wake of the death of George Floyd, Nina Pop, Belly Mujinga, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and Tony McDade black people have been reminded, yet again, that to many their lives don’t matter.

We are raising funds for the creation of an organisation to offer a range of services to black children, young people and their families exclusively by black clinicians including:

Psychotherapies

Creative Arts Therapies

Psychiatry

Complementary therapies

Mentoring

The ongoing psychological trauma that the black community faces has an ongoing impact on our ability to thrive in a world that simply doesn’t want us to.

- There is a growing body of research to suggest that those exposed to racism may be more likely to experience mental health problems such as psychosis and depression.

- The Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey (APMS) found that Black men were more likely than their White counterparts to experience a psychotic disorder in the last year.

- Detention rates under the Mental Health Act during 2017/18 were four times higher for people in the ‘Black’ or ‘Black British’ group than those in the ‘White’ group.

- Suicide rates are higher among young men of Black African, Black Caribbean origin, and among middle aged Black African, Black Caribbean women than among their White British counterparts.

Research points to a strong need for greatly increased cultural competency in mental health services.

This includes:

- Increasing the ethnic diversity of mental health clinicians and health professionals.

- Taking action to address and reduce experiences of racism and discrimination.

- Practical improvements in language (interpreting, translating, literacy support).

- Meeting faith-related and religious needs.

- Provision of gender specific services and professionals.
