For nearly 10 years, I've been struggling to help the person who I care most for, Zain. Zain has been unable to access comprehensive treatment at a residential treatment facility, rather than a short term (3-5 day) stabilization facility. Ideally, Zain would spend 2-4 months at Skyland Trail in Atlanta. This program requires $33,000 per month, only accepts private insurance, and one month’s cost must be paid Day 1.
When Zain was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, it was years after his symptoms had compromised his life and limited his ability to interact with others. Rather than sympathy and assistance, he often faced attacks and criticism by many ignorant people. They were unable to grasp what he was facing. All of this has caused me deep anguish. The older brother who was my mentor, coach, role model, rival, and the one who I loved and leaned on the most, suffered beyond words almost everyday. Others blamed him and screamed at him for suffering. He found himself locked up in jail, alienated by others, repeatedly told he was bad, and his misery was justified when others don't know we lived a very traumatic childhood.
In a family focused on maintaining outward appearances, his desperate need for help has long been discounted. This was largely because we could not afford proper treatment. My parents had unexpected financial issues, and were not able to respond with a nuanced, modern understanding of mental illness. Our challenges were compounded by an inadequate treatment system. Lawmakers, limited resources, and Supreme Court rulings mean many psychiatric hospital stays are limited to 3 days. This drove a cycle of incarcerations, involuntary commitment at short-term stabilization facilities, and ongoing crisis at home.
Any monetary donations in any amounts would be appreciated. All funds will go to his treatment. Any compassionate words or messages for my brother are also needed because for him to heal. We must prove to him he still does matter, he is cared for, he has nothing to be ashamed of, and he will never be forgotten about.
