Help Us to provide Mental Health Care for Our Son, Hagen

Our son Hagen Kunz is a kind, sensitive young man who lives with autism and schizophrenia. For the past six years, our family has been in a constant fight to get him the help he desperately needs. It has been an exhausting, heartbreaking journey marked by repeated hospitalizations, stays in multiple facilities (some more than once), and even periods of incarceration when the system failed to provide appropriate mental health care.

He is not a criminal. He is not a lost cause. He is a person with serious mental health challenges who needs consistent, long-term treatment in a safe and structured environment where professionals understand his diagnoses and can truly help him stabilize and heal.

Unfortunately, our insurance is essentially useless when it comes to covering residential or long-term care. Time and time again, we are told that services are “not covered,” “out of network,” or only approved for very short stays that do nothing to address his real needs. Each discharge without proper support puts him right back into crisis, restarting the cycle all over again.

In addition to trying to secure appropriate care for him now, we are still carrying the weight of multiple medical bills from previous ambulance services, hospitalizations and treatment. Many of these costs were not covered by insurance, and we continue to pay them while also trying to find a way forward for our son. The financial strain has become overwhelming, but giving up on him is not an option.

This is not easy for us to share. We are private people, and we are also proud — proud of our son for continuing to fight battles most people will never see, and proud of our family for standing by him through every setback and crisis. Asking for help is humbling, but we have reached a point where we cannot do this alone.

We are asking for help so we can place our son in a facility where he can receive the care he needs for however long it takes — not just a few days or weeks, but real treatment, real structure, and real hope. The funds raised will go toward:
• Long-term residential or specialized mental health care
• Treatment programs experienced with autism and schizophrenia
• Medications, evaluations, and related care costs
• Outstanding medical bills from prior treatment
• Basic needs while he is in treatment

We love our son deeply and refuse to give up on him, even when the system has. Any donation, no matter the amount, will help us move closer to giving him safety, dignity, and a chance at a better life.

We are Christians and know that God answers prayer and we would appreciate your prayers for our son Hagen and family.

If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing our story. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your compassion, support, and your prayers.
