On May 4th 2025, I will be running the Victoria Park London Half Marathon in support of Men’s Minds Matter, a charity dedicated to men’s mental health. This cause is deeply personal to me, as my grandad, Wayne Woodhouse, tragically took his life in July 2005. Though I never had the chance to meet him, I have seen the devastating impact that it has had on his children and family and I know he would be incredibly proud of this journey especially as he had a passion for running. I am also running in memory of Kyle James Goodwin, who sadly took his own life on December 15 2022, at just 30 years old. Their stories, yet so similar, leaving behind children that will have to grow up without a father, like too many others It highlights the urgent need to break the stigma surrounding men’s mental health and ensure that no one suffers in silence.
Men’s Minds Matter is a UK-based charity dedicated to improving men’s mental health and preventing male suicide. The organization focuses on raising awareness, providing support and offering resources to help men struggling with their mental well-being. With suicide being one of the leading causes of death among men, Men’s Minds Matter emphasizes early intervention and encourages open conversations about mental health. They offer psychoeducational tools, self-help strategies and crisis support to empower men to seek help when they need it. By challenging stigma and promoting a culture of emotional resilience, the charity aims to create a world where men feel comfortable discussing their struggles and accessing the support they deserve.
Although these circumstances are 20 years apart it still shows that too often, men feel unable to speak out, leading to devastating consequences. By running this race, I hope to raise awareness and vital funds to support those who are struggling. This is more than just a half marathon, it’s a step towards change, towards open conversations and towards ensuring that no family has to endure the heartbreak of losing a loved one in this way. Every mile I run is for Wayne, for Kyle and for every man who has ever felt alone in their battle. No one should ever feel that death is their only option.
