This year Mended Wing will be tackling Shakespeare’s The Two Gentlemen of Verona. This early comedy blends slapstick comedy with gorgeous poetry in a searing satire of what it means to be a “gentleman.” When Valentine and Proteus both fall for the lovely Sylvia, friendships are strained, promises are broken, and everyone makes a fool of themselves for love.
Following on the great success of last spring’s tour, we will be presenting a small-cast production of Two Gentlemen at many of the same schools in and around Atlanta that we performed for last year. In addition we will also be touring down to Miami, Florida, to present to several schools in the Miami-Dade area.
When my classmate, collaborator, and co-founder, Cameron Morton, and I first conceived Mended Wing, we dreamed of being able to make Shakespeare accessible to middle and high school students across the South, free of charge.
Last May we performed in over 10 middle and high schools, as well as at a home for at-risk youth, and reached an audience of close to three thousand over the course of two weeks.
This year we hope to double that number. As we strive to widen the conversations about Shakespeare in our schools across the south, it is essential that we expand our base of schools, to encompass even more communities.
With greater ambitions, of course, comes a larger budget. That’s where you, beloved patron of the arts, come in. This year we are asking for a total of $4000 to cover travel, food, and lodging expenses for our 7 Company Members, to buy costumes and props, and provide a small stipend for the company members who work tirelessly to bring Shakespeare to the schools.
Any and all donations are greatly appreciated, both by us, and by the schools that get to see free Shakespeare.
With love and gratitude,
Mended Wing Theatre Co.
