Men teaching preschool

Donation protected
A few years ago when I transitioned from working in television to teaching, I was surprised and a little shocked to discover how few male teachers there were. Especially in preschools. Are men less nurturing? I don’t believe so. And yet there is a perception – in my mind a misconception, that they are. It’s part and parcel of toxic masculinity stereotyping.

I want to open minds and redress the gender imbalance in this arena. I believe that just as women are under-represented in politics and boardrooms, men are under-represented in early childhood education.

As a final thesis for my masters in early childhood education, I'm making a short documentary film about men in preschool education. I will be interviewing male educators and their colleagues and supervisors, as well as parents, to get their take on the situation. I will be getting to grips with the questions: “Why are there so few male preschool teachers? What specific challenges do men in preschool education face? How do young children benefit from being taught by men? What can we do to attract more men to the field?”

Why a film? Partly because film/video have been my chosen media of expression for years but more importantly because after I have presented this documentary in an academic setting, I can send it out into the universe where it can open hearts and minds to bring about true change.

As to my credentials and ability to create such a film in a way that will be compelling, please note the following:

During my career in television as a writer/producer, I worked in the UK for Granada TV, and in the US for A&E Television Networks (including The History Channel),  American Movie Classics and VH1.

I won two Telly Awards, and was a finalist for for The New York Festivals  and for The New York ADDYs.  As writer/producer, I was part of a team that won a Daytime EMMY for the film magazine show “Behind the Screen”.

Budget:

Cameraman fee (for two days shooting): $1,000.00

Sundries :(transportation, water and coffee for interviewees, materials, location costs): $500.00

Total: $1,500.00

I hope to start shooting interviews in late February and need Go Fund Me money by then.

I will be very grateful for your help with this and as a sign of my appreciation I will list your name in the credits of the documentary.
