We at Edible Memphis are communicating with representatives from City Hall, Nashville, and Washington and with other leaders who are working on public policies and emergency relief mechanisms. But those measures are unlikely to come quickly enough for our food industry workers to keep their apartments, transportation, and food security.
Our food industry businesses already operate in one of the riskiest sectors of the economy, and the current crisis has come for them first.
If you’re one of those whose job and income are less disrupted—please help.
We have started a fund that can be accessed by workers whose hours have been curtailed or eliminated because of this crisis and who are not being otherwise compensated. Though the assistance now is just for industry workers, in the future it may also be used for short-term loans to business owners who have been impacted.
SERVICE INDUSTRY WORKERS: Please complete this short survey to help us prioritize those in our community most at risk and in need. All information shared remains confidential. If you haven’t already, click here to begin your application for Unemployment Benefits/Reemployment Assistance.
These funds will be dispersed to applicants through Venmo, CashApp, or Paypal. They will be transferred to the applicants as quickly as possible based on need expressed through the survey. Applicants can then use the funds for rent, utilities, food, transportations, or other expenses as their need dictates.
We expect to start with $500 disbursements and will continually reevaluate, pending availability and circumstances.
We at Edible Memphis have worked to tell stories, celebrate heroes, and bridge gaps in the local food industry. Now is a critical time for deeper action. In addition to our activity on social media (Facebook/Instagram), we’ll continue to look for ways to be a resource to this industry that feeds our bodies, our hearts, and our communities.
Please donate and share.
