Memphis living legend in need of aid
Donation protected
Dr. Coby Smith, a long-time civil rights activist, organizer, lecturer, historian, Founder of the 1960s Invaders, and early advocate of Black History development. While his life and career have been devoted to helping others, Coby's circumstances have taken a turn for the worse. Now a 78-year-old stroke and cancer survivor whose wife, Constance, is also experiencing health problems, he finds himself in need of the same help and care that he's given to others through the years.
Social security deposited a reduced amount of $200 into his account without any prior notice, needing to recoup Medicare Part B premiums that had previously been paid. That happened at the same time the utility company notified him of a major leak from his hot water heater and one of the toilets. To top that off, they are facing major car difficulties and need a new roof as well. The Smiths need to raise around $20,000.00; all donations will go to putting them back on their feet.
Chronicled in books and documentaries like At River I Stand and The Invaders, Smith's reputation for speaking truth to power helped foster a generation of activists, elected officials, and free speakers in a largely static and regressive south.
