Memory of Ilya

My name is Inga Revekko, and I am a friend of the Koshel family.

A few months ago Dima and Diana Koshel, along with their children, came to the United States from Belarus. Dmitriy, the father, received a talent visa for his exceptional achievements in sports. He is a first-class swimming coach, a master of sports, and a champion of Belarus in swimming.

Before their trip, their older son Ilya was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer. Their primary goal in coming to the United States was to seek life-saving treatment for him. The Koshels chose one of the nation's best children’s hospitals, CHLA, for his care. For the past few months, the finest doctors in the U.S. have been fighting for Ilya’s life.

Unfortunately, the type of cancer Ilya had proved to be very aggressive, and soon after their arrival, he lost the ability to move and was hospitalized.

On August 2nd, Ilya celebrated his 16th birthday surrounded by his siblings, mom, and dad in the hospital. Sadly, on October 31, 2023, Ilya passed away at the hospital.

Ilya is survived by his three brothers, a sister, and his parents. The family arrived with limited financial resources.
