Amidst our community's demands for justice, we've seen beautiful messages like "No Justice, No Peace," "Say His Name," and "Black Lives Matter" painted on our streets and storefronts. Incredible murals and works of art, primarily created by BIPOC artists, decorate our community and reinforce the power of the movement.
In the coming weeks, organizations will take down the plywood covering their windows, and while the fight for justice will continue, some of the artistic representations of this movement will be lost. We are on a mission to change that. Years from now, when we look back at the importance of this moment, we want this artwork to be present, so we’re raising funds to help the Minnesota African American Heritage Museum & Gallery preserve this art in an exhibit.
The three of us, Leesa, Joy, and Phyu-Sin, are collecting artwork to memorialize this movement. The Minnesota African American Heritage Museum & Gallery (based in Minneapolis) has enthusiastically agreed to partner with us, creating a new exhibit from this artwork that will be launched in early Fall 2020.
As one of the largest civil rights movements of our time, this is history in the making. Art should be preserved, and it should be memorialized through a Black-owned and oriented organization.
