Our dad, Steven M. Yodice, a retired Police Sergeant of the Freeport P.D. on Long Island, NY was suddenly and tragically taken from us on Monday, August 15, 2022.
Dad was 9 years old when he knew the only thing he wanted to do in his life was be a police officer, and he faithfully and enthusiastically served his department for 20 years before retiring to Florida in 1996 where he loved nothing more than spending time with his two daughters, Angela and Jennifer, and his three beautiful grandsons, Nicolas, Jake & Logan.
We had so many hopes on how to spend our time together. Taking the kids to Disney (one of his favorite places ever, specifically because of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride!!)… Seeing the Yankees… Maybe even finally getting a chance to see Paul McCartney in concert together.
Dad was never one to sit around and do nothing, even in retirement, so he was always working - whether it was in security, an assisted living driver or as a hotel concierge. Wherever he went or worked, he instantly made friends and would always jump at the chance to tell his favorite stories from his time with the Freeport Police Department. He relived the moments in those stories with such enthusiasm and joy, he would light up talking about all of his life-long brothers in blue, many of whom he was planning on seeing in the upcoming PBA reunion this September.
Dad had struggled with major health issues for several years but this past May he underwent an open heart surgery with triple bypass, followed by a short stint in cardiac rehab. Over the last 2 months he struggled with what we all thought was the pain from that surgery and continued to see his doctors as planned. However, an emergency trip to the ER on August 9th proved to be bad enough to warrant more testing and admittance to the hospital and we were all then informed, for the very first time ever, that dad had very advanced and aggressive pancreatic cancer that had metastasized to his lungs and liver and we were told he may only have weeks to months left with us.
Over the next 6 days, at his side, we watched his condition worsen to the point where we realized we had far less time with him than we hoped for and made the impossible decision to follow his wishes and begin hospice the afternoon of August 15, but only 4 short hours later, he was gone.
Our dad had so much love in his heart not only for his biological family but for his family in blue. He deserves the best memorial we can possibly give him and we are hoping that you can do whatever you can to help us make that happen for him.
Thank you from his daughters,
Angela Yodice & Jennifer Schoenemann
