Andy Manek was a one-in-a-million guy who left us suddenly on Tuesday January 26th, 2021 of a heart-related illness. Nobody who encountered him will ever forget his salty charm and gorgeous, gap-toothed grin that he passed down to his two wonderful daughters Nicole Manek and Colette Gale.
Andy was a magical combination of tough and tender. He would kick someone's butt for stepping out of line as easily as he would sob at a sad story. And he LOVED the great City of Toronto - proudly strolling around his favourite neighbourhoods like Kensington Market and Chinatown and telling stories of his youth and the wonderful history of our town.
Another thing he loved to do was visit old homes he used to live in and track the progress and growth of the trees in the yard - happily exclaiming "look how big that Silver Maple got!" and regaling his kids with neighbourhood lore.
With this in mind, we friends of the family think the most wonderful tribute we could conjure is to have a tree planted in his honour at Christie Pits park where he got engaged to his sweetheart and started the loving family that now grieves his loss.
We are fundraising to have the tree planted this spring. In lieu of flowers or gifts, it would be a really special gesture to contribute whatever you wish to this fundraiser to help us honour our dear late pal.
Andy Manek is survived by his loving daughters Nicole and Colette, his grandsons Marcus Gale and Leon Manek Collier, his sons-in-law Rob Gale and Wendell Collier, his brother Peter Manek and his ex-wife Maureen Palmer.
Contribute what you can and please leave the family a message - we're sure they'll appreciate it!
With all our love and deepest condolences,
Allison, Adrian and Michelle
