In early May 2024, Yesenia Salvador-Backer’s life changed forever. Her husband Scott set out with family to hike the Scouts Lookout Trail in Zion National Park—a beautiful but challenging climb. At the top of the trail, on May 6th, he suffered a seizure that led to a fatal heart attack. In an instant, a joyful adventure turned into the most heartbreaking day imaginable.
Since that day, Yesenia and her daughter Brooke—who has Angelman’s Syndrome—have longed to visit that exact spot to honor his memory. But with Yesenia and her daughter's mobility challenges and the difficulty of the trail, it seemed impossible.
Then, they learned about Luke5Adventures. Using specialized adaptive hiking equipment and the strength of caring volunteers, Luke5 makes it possible for people of all abilities to experience trails they never dreamed they could.
On May 6, 2026—two years to the day—Yesenia and Brooke have plans to reach the top of Scouts Lookout for the first time, with the help of Luke5Adventures. This memorial hike will be more than just a journey up a trail—it will be a moment of remembrance, love, and healing.
Any trip associated with Luke5Adventures comes with a cost, and we’ve estimated it will take roughly $7,500 between travel, lodging, and rental car expenses.
We invite you to come alongside Luke5Adventures, so we can help Yesenia and Brooke make it there to memorialize their husband and father properly.
