In the early morning hours of May 2, my nephew Deven was among 12 who fell victim to a gunfire attack at an apartment, and among the 2 who have since lost their lives in a senseless shower of bullets and the screams of terrified young adults. Countless lives have been upended and heartbreak has consumed us in this tragic nightmare that has no end. Deven was just 16, at a point in his life where he'd found a friend group he'd had to move away from. He'd become accustomed to traveling back to Amarillo every weekend after he got off work from his job in Midland to see them. He was smart, mature, responsible and his parents were learning to allow him the freedom he needed to spend time with those he was so close to there. May 1st was no different as he made his way into Amarillo to see his girlfriend and the rest of his friends and family.

Deven was unforgettable—he had the most infectious laugh and smile, the main character energy those around him envied and aspired to match, much like his father. He gave the best hugs and was somewhat of an adrenaline junkie. He was at home on a boat, showed off on a jetski, and lived for the rush of the open water. He had faith in God and was like any other teenager you see walking down the street with their group of friends; a trendsetter with a unique style he started and others followed. Addicted to his phone and friends, he once racked up a big bill on a cruise ship just trying to stay in touch and be present in their lives. As the youngest of five children, he learned to be quick-witted, tough, and knew how to convince his parents of his ever-changing needs. He loved money and all the things it afforded him. We are completely heartbroken.

We'd love the opportunity to memorialize his sweet face and memory with a tribute to his life lost too soon. We're hoping to raise money to bring awareness, to allow those who live from afar to offer support by way of sharing memories, love, and aid to help purchase a plaque or memorial to be determined at a later date depending on what we can raise.
