Update – May 2025

Thank you so much to everyone who donated. Your support made the memorial possible and gave me the space to care for everything Scott left behind — thoughtfully, and with love. I’ll always be grateful for that.

Since then, I’ve done everything I can to hold it all together — emotionally, financially, and practically.

But the truth is, I’m still finding my footing. Grief changes form, but it hasn’t gone away. And neither have the challenges: housing, work, delayed life insurance — they’re still ongoing, and they’ve made stability really hard to reach.

This fundraiser remains open for those who are able to support what comes next. Your help has already meant more than I can say — and your continued support matters deeply as I focus on moving forward.

Original Post – 2024

Hello, I’m Alberto Newman. My partner, Scott Gardner, passed suddenly on December 4, 2023.

For many, Scott was a magical, larger-than-life, kind-hearted, and generous person who would help anyone in need. He brought light, humor, and a sense of connection wherever he went.

To me, he was so much more than a partner. He was my best friend, gym buddy, concert companion, dance partner, mentor, and the love of my life. We were each other’s inspiration — and in many ways, soulmates.

We held a beautiful celebration of life on February 3, 2024, at El Rio and SF Eagle. Both venues kindly donated their spaces.

Since Scott’s family lives out of state, I’ve been taking care of everything here in San Francisco — going through our shared apartment, organizing his belongings, and handling everything he left behind. At the same time, I’ve been working to stabilize my own life and health while navigating intense grief.

I returned to work shortly after Scott’s passing, but it quickly became clear that I needed time to step back. I used what savings I had and kept going as best I could — but the emotional, financial, and logistical weight has been immense.

Memorial Costs

Living Expenses

As I continue adjusting to life without Scott, I’ve taken on the full cost of our apartment and shared expenses. Your donations have helped cover rent, utilities, food, and basic necessities during this transition.

Preserving Scott’s Wishes

Scott asked that, if anything happened to him, I do my best to keep the apartment and make sure his belongings were respected and cared for. I’ve been slowly sorting through everything — from electronics to clothes — with the hope of donating or distributing them thoughtfully to people and organizations he cared about.
