A celebration of James Henry Lollar’s life, age 75, of Brookeland, Texas, will be Saturday, October 26, 2019 from 10am-12pm at Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home in Jasper, TX.
Mr. Lollar, “The Sweet Potato Man," passed away October 12th, 2019 at home in “his chair,” surrounded by his loved ones, with his puppies in his lap. He was known as Poppy to family, a nickname given to him by his granddaughter, Cryston, a.k.a. his “little red-head.”
Poppy was a quiet, gentle man who lovingly doted on “My Honey,” his wife, Mary Ann Lollar, also of Brookeland.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, cooking pancakes and bacon for his kids on Saturday mornings, and surprising his wife with wildflowers.
He was known for his tremendous work ethic. Always the hard-worker, he was the go-to man to get the job done. He was always fair and taught his children the importance of being honest and loyal.
He was considered by many to be their “rock.” He was reliable, steady, calm, and could help you weather any storm.
His love for the outdoors, rock-hounding, and panning for gold, took him on many adventures. He loved to take his wife metal detecting on Texas beaches, delighting in finding treasures for her. He took his camper and traveled all over the lower 48, digging for opals, diamonds, sapphires, and sunstones. He was a lifetime member of the Gold Prospectors Association of America, and panned for gold in just about every river in Colorado. But, his favorite place in the whole world was Alaska. The awe-inspiring landscape, wildlife, pioneer-living and babbling brooks glistening with the promise of gold in the bottom of his pan drew him in. His proudest accomplishment was taking his wife on a trip up the Dalton highway, ending at the Prudhoe Bay oilfields in Deadhorse, the furthest north that can be driven in Alaska.
As he goes on his final adventure, his family would like to say “Ditto, Poppy! Mooches!”
His legacy lives on through his survivors. Wife, Mary; siblings, Joey Lollar and Julie “Sis” Tanner; children, Desiree Lollar Oujesky, Julie Ann Davis, Kay Baldree, Kathy “Kat” Lollar Carter, Mike Lollar, Crystal Lollar-Smith, James Lollar, Casandera Lollar, and Christopher Lollar. Through his children he has 13 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Funds will be used to cover funeral home expenses and to support the family as they deal with this loss.
