It is with a heavy heart that I am sharing this. After a 4 year battle with breast cancer, my mom, Cassandra (Neicy) passed away the evening of December 29, 2020. She meant the world to our family and as I write this I am having trouble holding back tears.
My mother was a single parent and raised 3 hard-headed, stubborn boys into strong men. My mom instilled values of dedication, hard work and always being there for each other. Growing up she would work 12-16 our days just to put food on the table and to keep a roof over our head; sometimes even picking up a 2nd part time job so we could afford things like basketball camp and church outings. She was determined to provide us with a better life; a life that she did not have but wanted her boys to have.
In 2005 we lost our little brother, Deon, at the age of 19 in a car accident and our world changed forever. I had to become the rock that my mother needed during this time and all I could think about was how much she was going though...how much we were all going through and what I could do to help ease her pain. Fortunately, we had an amazing support structure of family and friends who helped us persevere.
Now I'm reaching out to my family and friends. Due to my mom being diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer in 2016 and her being unable to work, life insurance was too expensive. My family began saving for funeral expenses once we learned that her cancer was terminal a few months ago but things suddenly took a turn for the worst after her first chemo treatment. My mom went to the Todd Cancer Institute on December 23rd and was admitted to the hospital right after her treatment. That was the last time I seen her alive.
