Ms. Gardner, Linda Campbell Gardner, was my first-grade teacher at Valle Lindo School, but her impact on my life reached far beyond that classroom. I had just moved to Camarillo and was frightened to be starting over in a new place. From the very beginning, she wrapped me in kindness, patience, and care. Because of her, what could have been an overwhelming year became a safe and joyful one. She made me feel seen, valued, and capable, and her love did not go unnoticed.
Our relationship did not end when first grade did. Ms. Gardner continued to guide and encourage me throughout my life, especially as I pursued my own journey into teaching. We shared many long phone conversations filled with laughter, stories, and wisdom. She believed in me even when I doubted myself, always gently reminding me to be my best self and to lead with love. Her encouragement helped shape not only the teacher I became, but the person I strive to be. Ms. Gardner loved Jesus, people, and her country, and she lived those values every day through her actions. Her kindness and compassion touched countless hearts, including mine. Even now, as I connect with my own students, she is never far from my thoughts. I often find myself asking, What would Ms. Gardner do? Her legacy lives on in every life she influenced, and I am forever grateful to have been one of her students.
To honor Ms. Gardner’s memory and the lasting impact she had on our community, I am raising funds to place a memorial bench in a local Camarillo park. This bench will serve as a place for all who knew her to reflect, remember, and celebrate the kindness she shared with so many. Your support—whether through a donation or by sharing this fundraiser—will help keep Ms. Gardner’s spirit alive in our community. Thank you for helping us honor her memory.
