Mary Katherine Hill Herold passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord on November 17th, 2025, after facing brain cancer for just over two years with grace, humor, and unwavering faith.

Mary always loved Duke Gardens, and would go for every holiday or special occasion to enjoy the beautiful flowers, sit in the quiet of the trees, or show her dogs the newest veggie growing. During her treatment, Duke Gardens became one of Mary’s most sacred places. It was a source of peace, beauty, and steadiness in the midst of a lot of change.

Mary was a ray of sunshine. She was joyful, sincere, curious, welcoming, and fully alive. She made everyone feel known and valued, and she loved with generosity, playfulness, and devotion. Her warmth, laughter, and intentionality left a deep imprint on everyone who loved her.

To honor Mary’s life and the peace she found at Duke Gardens, we hope to place a memorial bench there in her name. It would be a place for others to rest, breathe, and feel the same comfort she did. It was something she wanted even more than a funeral*, because it allowed her to serve people even after she was gone.
