Mel’s fundraising for Clatterbridge Cancer Centre

My name is Mel Patterson and I live in the Isle of Man. I am raising funds on behalf of the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre (“CCC”) based in Liverpool.

On 1 April 2021, my oldest sister went to our local hospital for a routine blood test. The next few hours were a whirlwind for her, she was contacted quickly to be advised that anomalies had been found in her blood sample and the word leukaemia was mentioned. Within 24 hours, my sister was flown to the CCC and after tests, it was confirmed that she did indeed have acute myeloid leukaemia.

From the very beginning, the care, support, hard work and commitment shown by the staff at CCC was incredible. Due to COVID 19 restrictions, my sister travelled alone and has spent a great deal of time without her loved ones. After her first round of chemotherapy, my sister became very, very sick and was taken to the ICU. We were allowed to see her due to her being so very unwell and the care shown by the ICU team and CCC nurses to both my family and my sister will never be forgotten. Thankfully with the hard work of the doctors and nurses, my sister is still with us and has completed a further 2 rounds of chemotherapy.

I was fortunate enough to be able to visit my sister on her return to CCC and every single member of staff I met - nurses, volunteers, porters, cleaners and HCAs were just amazing people. They have become my sister’s substitute family whilst we have been unable to be with.

The work the staff do at CCC is incredible, the strength and positivity shown is just inspiring to me. They work ridiculously hard and the difficulty of seeing people suffer with cancer must really take it out of them but you would never know. I will never be able to thank the CCC team enough and repay all the work that has been carried out to save my sisters life.

The centre itself is just a wonderful facility built with patients in mind.

For all the amazing hard work and commitment the CCC team have provided, I would like to say thank you and try and raise as much money as possible to show my gratitude. After the last few months, the biggest realisations to me have been how important the NHS staff and cancer treatment centres are; together with how precious every moment with our loved ones is, don’t take this time for granted. As such, I’m going to do something I don’t particular enjoy and challenge myself, I’m going to run 100 miles during the month of October 2021. That works out at just over 3 miles a day. My aim is to raise £10 per mile - £1,000. Thank you for taking the time to read this and thank you if you choose to donate.

To every member of staff at the CCC, thank you ❤️.
