Melody Ni’s MFA Directing Thesis Project

Hi, everyone, my name is Melody Ni. I’m a third year MFA Directing student at Loyola Marymount University. This is a fundraising page for my thesis film “Diana”. The story is about a little girl who wants to get her daddy back for Christmas but she's not aware her parents are getting a divorce.
I grew up in China and was the first person in my entire family to go to college. I graduated with a bachelors in economics for only 2 years, and worked a corporate luxury job. I realized this wasn't what I wanted with my life. I felt like a prisoner so I made my first life changing decision, I quit my job, and went to a rural mountain village to be a volunteer teacher in a primary school. I stayed for half a year and paid everything to help the local people. By that time, I was aware of my dream, to be a storyteller. I betrayed my culture for not getting married or having kids after graduation, and came to the United States to accomplish my goals.
Since both of my parents are retired I became the only source of income for my entire family. I worked harder and longer than ever before and now I'm at the final stage of graduation. There is always a heavy weight on my shoulders but I don’t want to give up. The reason why I want to make this film is because family is the most important thing in our lives. Most of the time, we enjoy the love from the family but sometimes, it can also get on our nerves. High expectations, over protection, etc. The key to keeping a healthy relationship is always dependent on good communication and trust. My film is about a 6 years old girl who isn’t fully understand what her parents are going through. That’s why the mom is trying to protect her by not telling her the truth, but the truth always comes out. I’ll take you on a journey about how the daughter and mom reconnect emotionally.
