Please jump on board to support our friend Melody Hughes. I have known Melody for 11years since we first met as co workers in our youth support roles for a local Youth Housing services. Melody’s unconditional helping nature shone through and this has continued through the time I have known her. Now I feel it is my turn to support her the best I can. I find this difficult to write as I struggle to find the words to describe Melodys situation and the enormity of the sadness I feel for her situation.Melody is a 41 year old woman, a friend, a daughter, a wife and a mother to four children. Two of Melody’s children are in adulthood now and her twins are 4 years old. Melody has numerous health conditions which has deteriorated her body in the past couple of years but certainly not her spirit.
In 2009 Melody experienced a traumatic work place event which significantly impacted her life resulting in a diagnosis of post traumatic stress disorder. This left Melody unable to re-enter the work force or continue her passion in supporting vulnerable young people.
Melody has unstable Type 1 Diabetes. Melody suffered a random spinal cord injury in 2017 which has resulted in partial paraplegia (Cuada Equina Syndrome) and suffers with Autonomic Neuropathy. The spinal cord injury was followed by multiple surgeries and a lengthy rehabilitation process.
As a result of these conditions Melody is booked in to have her left leg amputated below the knee. Surgery is scheduled for 23rd July 2019. Following surgery Melody will require a hospital stay and a lengthy rehabilitation program. Melody will be in a wheelchair for a period of 6 months until a prosthetic can be fitted. Once recovered Melody will return to have her right leg amputated.
With all of her medical obstacles Melody has shown tremendous strength and resilience and her main focus is on recovery and getting back to being the best mum that she can be to her beautiful tribe.
As you can imagine every aspect of Melodys life has been impacted by her health and I hope that support will be able to ease the financial burden so that she can concentrate on her recovery.
