This campaign is dedicated to the support of Melody McCormick (age 7) and her brothers Luke (age 5) and Callum (age 2). They have been given a life challenge to overcome a condition known as HLH (hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis). This genetic condition is life-threatening and can cause the immune system to attack the body's own tissues and organs, including the liver and brain. The current treatment is chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, but there is no known cure.
In August 2014, Melody's brother Luke was diagnosed with HLH (more info on Luke's Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/healinglukewithhope). Luke received his transplant in November 2014 at Methodist Children's Hospital in San Antonio. During Luke's recovery we were told that Melody and Callum were also at risk of having the genetic mutations that cause HLH. After months of waiting, Callum was cleared of HLH and Melody was diagnosed in March 2015. We then began a race against time to plan Melody's bone marrow transplant before her HLH became activated. During this process we learned that Callum was an exact match to be her bone marrow donor! It was a very hard choice to make, but Callum donated without complications and Melody received her transplant in July 2015. Melody's recovery went well at first, but in September her body started to reject the transplant. She is currently receiving treatment through a drug trial to help her body accept the transplant and recover. It has taken us away from our home in Corpus Christi and challenged us to humbly ask for help. Luke and Callum have been in the care of family members while Mom and Dad stay with Melody and work. We look forward to the day when can all be together again. THANK YOU to all who have followed us on our journey. Your love, support and prayers have carried us through. We are forever grateful. All funds raised will only be used for Melody and Luke's continued medical expenses, the care of Luke and Callum while separated from Mom and Dad and our family's travel expenses between San Antonio and Corpus.
