Melissa's race to recovery

Donation protected
On the morning of April 1, 2017 (not a joke), Melissa was on her way to a kids' Spartan race with her 7 year old nephew when this tragic accident happened. She was on 580W near Livermore where she tried to avoid hitting something that flew out from a truck and lost control of her vehicle. The car spun out and eventually rolled over causing melissa to suffer from life threatening injuries. She was immediately unable to feel anything below her stomach and was rushed to the ER at Eden Hospital by helicopter. Thankfully the young boy was unharmed.

Upon arrival, the doctors told her family that she might never be able to walk again. All of us refuse to believe that. As of today, Melissa has undergone two spinal surgeries and is recovering well. She is slowly regaining sensation and strength in her upper body but it is also causing her to feel a lot of pain. An intern was massaging her legs one night and she was able to feel light pressure, but was unable to tell which leg it was on; Melissa says she can feel the coldness from the air conditioner on her feet. This sounds like a good sign.

Melissa is one of the strongest, kindest, caring and most active people we know. She runs spartan races/half marathons, trains at the gym 1-2 times a day (almost 7 days a week), and is always willing to help everyone in need. She was preparing to do her first marathon prior to this accident. We know that even if she isn't able to walk again, fitness will still be a strong part of her life. We are here to make sure of that!

There will be a lot of expenses in order to get her the therapy she will need, the help she will need and making her house wheelchair accessible. She will also be out of a job for quite some time due to physical therapy and recovery. During all of this, she will still have bills to pay.

My brother and I are setting up this gofundme so that she can focus on recovering and not have to stress about expenses. She has never been the type to ask for help but we know she needs it. Even though we know she will not like the idea of help, we are sure she will appreciate every bit of it. We want to make sure our best friend knows we love her, care for her and that others care for her too. Thank you for your love and support.
