My name is Melissa Weyant, a mother and grandmother struggling with the health challenge of my life. On December 9, 2024, I was diagnosed with nodal marginal zone lymphoma—a long way to say cancer of the lymph nodes. The journey that followed has been grueling. I began chemotherapy shortly thereafter, but the treatment was harsh, and I struggled with severe side effects.

By late February, my white and red blood cells were being killed, resulting in my blood not functioning properly, and sending me to the hospital for an extended stay. The chemotherapy prescribed nearly killed me, so now I am on a version that slows things down but can’t defeat the cancer. My doctor informed me that my cancer has progressed to stage 4 and is incurable.

As if battling cancer wasn't enough, a scammer posing as a Federal Trade Commission investigator stole my life savings. He convinced me to transfer my money into a bitcoin wallet, claiming it was to protect my funds from fraudulent accounts opened in my name. It was a lie, and he took everything I had saved over ten years. It was money I planned to use to pay for my cancer treatments.

Now, without my savings, I face immense medical bills. I share my story to warn others: don't trust unsolicited contacts from the internet, never buy gift certificates or cryptocurrency at the insistence of someone you don't know, and always verify claims of legal action before panicking. I know better, but I can honestly say that thanks to my illness I am not as sharp as I used to be, and I became an unwitting victim.
