In March, Melissa began having severe side pain for a about 2-3 weeks. After several trips to the doctor hoping for a quick diagnosis, every test kept coming back with no answers and she was sent on her way with pain medication. Her pain became unbearable and she went back to the ER again for the second time in a week. This time a CT Scan was done. The results came back that night and was not the news she was expecting. The scan found her lymph nodes on her right side were swollen and she had thickening in the lining of her esophagus. She was admitted into the hospital. They went in with a camera and found that the thickening was a small tumor. A biopsy was performed and Melissa and her family received the devastating news, that she had stage 3 esophageal cancer. Over her week stay, more scans and tests were done to put together the best plan for treatment. She received her first dose of chemo the day she was discharged on March 31, 2017.
She currently is undergoing radiation everyday and chemo treatment once a week. The doctors are planning for surgery in June if all goes well, and more chemo after to make sure that her cancer is gone.
Having four little ones all under the age of eight is a lot. Melissa’s husband, Frank, has been doing his very best trying to juggle everything. Her mom, Rosa, has been a great support for them.
Melissa is a beautiful, loving, caring Mom, Wife, Daughter, Sister, Cousin, Aunt, Best Friend and Friend to many!!
We pray that she fights this cancer and has a speedy recovery.
