Hi. This is hard to write.
Melissa the 9 pound Maltese angel has been the love of my life for 15 years. I got her when I was 18 years old and she taught me how to care about something more than myself. She has a huge personality and no one has ever made me laugh harder.
She's been a very healthy dog for most of her life. Almost 2 years ago, we were having a growth under her tongue removed, and she almost stopped breathing so they had to immediately stop the surgery and the growth was not removed. It was small at the time and she was already 13. After a series of tests, I decided that leaving it alone was the safest option for her. Cut to two years later and she is a perfectly healthy 15 year old, but the growth has impacted her by getting much bigger. She can no longer eat anything that's not soft and even then it's very difficult for her, and the tumor is protruding out the sides of her mouth getting chewed on- now causing her pain. It is also causing more saliva to build up and she now has a perpetual cough because of it. Luckily the oncologist does not think it looks cancerous.
This tumor seems to be the only thing standing in her way of living a few more years. I had all the proper tests done to make sure she'd be ok for surgery (over $1000) just to hear that the estimate of removing the tumor will cost $4,300 (perhaps more). I was devastated. It's come at a particularly hard time financially, with other family members experiencing severe health problems.
Asking for help is really hard, but I'd do anything for Melissa. She might miss the potty pad while making direct eye contact with you, or antagonize the cat, or use your credit cards without permission, or borrow your car without asking, or pass gas that could honestly be weaponized- but damnit if she isn't the sweetest and funniest ride or die a girl could have. I would be eternally grateful for your donation towards helping Melissa live long enough to keep treating us like her assistants, demanding expensive food, pooping behind the executive producer's desk at my work, and being the #1 most beautiful supermodel in the world.
While the 5K goal of this fundraiser anticipates the worst case scenarios, anything leftover will go to my favorite animal rescue called Josh And His Critters. It's run by a wonderful woman who takes the most dire cases from the shelters and gives them the best care possible. Anything that breathes, she helps.
Anything helps and thank you so so much x
Melissa's Dedicated Executive Assistant,
Ashley
P.s. For full transparency, here is the picture of the estimate. They included a low estimate but let me know that because of her age I should realistically expect the higher quote of $4,300 and should be prepared for additional costs. The tumor is in a tough location and she needs a special anesthesia plan. After some research with other vets she has seen, this was not an outrageous quote. Also enjoy Melissa's modeling portfolio.
