This is Melissa. She is currently at OHSU with her toddler, being monitored by them for her high risk pregnancy.

Melissa found out she was pregnant back in January. But her excitement turned into sadness and anxiety when she found out at her 20 week ultrasound that there was something wrong with the baby. Ever since that news, she has not been able to enjoy her pregnancy because she is living with constant worry. At her 20 week ultrasound they told her there was something “off” with the babies heart. But they couldn’t tell what, they just said it was “not in the right spot” it was being pushed too far right but they didn’t know what was causing it. She was told to come back at 22 weeks for a recheck. She went back and they told her the same thing. They referred her to OHSU and was seen at 24 weeks. Which they did an Ultrasound and an echo and was told the same thing. “Not in the right spot but they don’t know why” Melissa demanded an MRI. At 27 weeks she had to go back to up to OHSU and have the MRI done. They called her a day later when she was already back home in Medford and told her she had to go back up and talk about the results because they were critical. At 28 weeks Melissa goes back up to OHSU and they informed her that her baby has CDH which is Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia. It is a birth defect where there is a hole or opening in the diaphragm, the muscle that separates the chest cavity from the abdomen. This allows organs from the abdomen, such as the stomach, intestines, and liver, to move into the chest cavity and crowd the lungs. The baby will need to be intubated and placed on many monitors the moment he is born. She was told she will not be able to hold the baby because he will need to go immediately to the NICU where he will stay anywhere from 6-16 weeks. The baby will have surgery to fix the opening and it will be a long recovery. Melissa was told that the babies right lung did not develop correctly and can/will cause issues as the baby grows up. Melissa was offered to terminate the pregnancy at 28 weeks she asked what they would look like and was told they would inject morphine into her belly to reach the baby. And stop the babies heart beat. Then she would be induced and have to have a vaginal birth. she could not bear the thought of that! She was also told that there is a chance the baby may not survive after birth with the diagnosis and what it entails. Her and her husband decided to give the baby a chance and go through with the OHSU surgeons plan and the OHSU NICUs plan. At her 32 weeks appointment Melissa was informed of another bad news. After a growth ultrasound they told her that her babies growth percentage had drastically decreased making her a HIGH RISK of stillbirth (the death of a fetus in the womb) at 34 weeks Melissa was in a car accident causing her to be flown to Portland to be checked out by their team. She has been having elevated blood pressures causing them to think she will get preeclampsia. She has now been relocated to Portland by her doctors to be monitored and will not be back home until her baby is born, had the surgery, been monitored and fully recovered. We are talking 4-5 months. All of this has caused an extreme financial burden on her and her family. All the Portland appointments, constantly having to miss work and To add to the mix, Her husband recently got laid off from his full time job and Melissa has now stopped working since she is living in Portland now. She will also have to pay for day care for her toddler in Portland once the baby is born since he can’t be in the NICU with his mom.

La llamaron un día después, cuando ya estaba de vuelta en casa en Medford, y le dijeron que tenía que volver y hablar sobre los resultados porque eran críticos. A las 28 semanas, Melissa regresa a OHSU y le informaron que su bebé tiene CDH, que es una hernia diafragmática congénita. Es un defecto de nacimiento donde hay un agujero o abertura en el diafragma, el músculo que separa la cavidad torácica del abdomen. Esto permite que los órganos del abdomen, como el estómago, los intestinos y el hígado, se muevan hacia la cavidad torácica y abarroten los pulmones.
