Hello, My name is Melina Latu, I am married to Edwyn Dane, and this is our story.
Update 05/19/2026: We have turned off automated Gofundme goals to be fully transparent and to accurately reflect the immediate need for funds for new housing after our eviction earlier this month, and getting Melina the care she needs to pay for medical expenses in this country, specifically for Melina's testing (such as MRIs) and treatment, equipment costs for possible brain damage from Mount Carmel Behavioral Health. We are also saving up for getting new housing such as an RV or small apartment, as an eviction makes it harder for us to find housing now.
I need IMMEDIATE mental healthcare to regain any kind of quality of life at all, and we were evicted recently by a cruel landlord who refused full payment to stay, despite meeting out payment plan obligations and never having an issue before this situation after living there for 4 years. Our landlord effectively drained much of our saved funds before this from a payment plan they never expected us to meet, and then refused to wait a day for Gofundme to process for us to pay our remaining balance.
My husband and I are pursuing legal action against the parent company of Mount Carmel for violation of our rights, and the gross negligence, cruelty, and abuse of the staff there.
My husband and I are both trafficking abuse survivors of our extremely abusive parents. We need funds for health care, legal action, and living expenses.
We currently live in Dublin, OH. Recently, we were forced to sell our wedding rings to pay rent in February and make ends meet. I had a mental health spiral after that and was involuntarily hospitalized in Mount Carmel Behavioral Health, where I was neglected, tortured, and abused for the week. The social worker at the ER violated our rights to be informed of all of our options, and I was sent to a facility I never would have consented to.
At this facility I received open abuse from both patients and some staff for my appearance and presentation, as I am an openly queer woman who is mixed Polynesian, and the only patient in my unit that was.
My husband and I repeatedly sought information relevant to my treatment and release, only to be denied or delayed for days on end. I also have CPTSD from growing up in an extremely abusive religious household, and all of this was reinforced by the austere and religiously strict conditions at the facility. I was not given the CPTSD care as advertised in the Facility's brochure, only group therapy and medication. My blood pressure rose significantly and I feared retaliation for speaking out.
Since being in this facility, my quality of life has plummeted, I have panic attacks every night, severe dissociative episodes, migraines due to light sensitivity I did not have before, and massive drug withdrawals from being heavily over medicated. I cannot work or function because of their abuse, and we have missed March's rent payment because of this. We are on the verge of being un-housed due to Mount Carmel's neglect and abuse.
My husband and I are pursuing legal action against the parent company of these hospitals for violation of our rights, and the gross negligence, cruelty, and abuse of the staff there.
Your donations would help us change our lives in so many ways:
- I would be able to get the mental health care I so desperately need now to restore my quality of life after the horrific trauma of being abused in that facility.
- We would be able to find housing and regain stability in our lives.
- We would be able to pursue legal action against this horrible for profit medical system and regain our dignity.
- We would be able to get me a scar removing Z-plasty so that I can finally feel comfortable in my own body and end my cruel branding from my past abuse from cigarette burns by my abusive stepfather, and end my extreme body dysmorphia and constant emotional and physical pain and suffering.
- We would be able to finally hold our parents legally accountable for all the damage they have done to our lives over the years.
- We would be able to fully focus our lives on healing and being the social issues content creators online that we have wanted to be together, since we met 6 years ago during the pandemic.
To say your donations would be live changing would be an understatement: They would be LIFE SAVING!
Please donate if you can, and if you cannot, please just share our story as much as possible! Thank you for anything you can do! We truly appreciate it!
