Melendez Homeless Family of 5

I am just a mother of a 20-month old that could never imagine what I witnessed Olivia endure with her three children today, August 19, 2020 and my help is not enough......

I was driving from my work this morning when I saw a family of five: Robert, Olivia, Caleb (6), Cali (3), and baby Richard (1) walking with a 5 gallon gas can to the nearest gas station in 80 degree heat. I stopped to ask if I could offer assistance in helping the father fill the gas can while the mother took the children back to the car for some shade..... I had no idea the struggles of this family nor the type of day they would endure.

I took the father and six-year old back to the car parked at the  Jewish Family Services where they have been seeking shelter at night since evicted during Covid from their place in Oceanside. Robert has been driving to Oceanside daily for his job while Olivia hangs out near the shelter during the day with the kids in the shade somewhere.  They MUST have a vehicle to enter the Jewish Family Services shelter every night and must leave with a vehicle in the early morning.  Robert must also have a vehicle for transportation to work. I dropped them off thinking the gas would be enough.... but proceeded to go to Target and buy the babies some electrolytes and non-perishable foodstuffs.

When I contacted Olivia to drop off the foodstuffs, she sounded very frazzled with her exact words, "I am in a bad situation can I call you after I lay the baby down (Richard - 1)" The bad situation was that the gas nor some fluid in the engine did not fix the car.... the transmission blew on their way to their storage unit in Spring Valley. No more car....no more shelter for the night for their babies.

I rallied a friend to pick them up at their storage unit and he dropped them off at the Motel 6 for the night. They somehow managed to rent a car for possibly a few days to get Robert back and forth to work and to be able to stay at the shelter to save money to get back on their feet.

They cannot carry much from rental car to shelter and most important is to get these kids a home! The raised funds 100% go towards a used car for the family and a deposit/first month's rent for the family.

Just close your eyes and imagine a world where we really supported our families that are suffering in this time of need. I know times are hard but even if it was just an extra $10-20 you would spend on some type of cheap China crap...you would be putting smiles back on these children's faces.....and easing the tears of a mother unable to keep her babies safe from the heat and hardships of this world.
