Melbourne Taekwondo Centre Fire
Donation protected
Melbourne Taekwondo Centre has been proudly teaching Taekwondo to students of all ages since its humble beginnings back in 1963. They have always been at the forefront of Taekwondo development in Australia and internationally, as they are the home to Australia’s only two World Sports Taekwondo Champions. Earlier today, an unconfirmed cause of a devastating fire has blazed through the centre destroying everything including the highly valued photos, awards, uniforms and memorabilia dating back to the 1960's. Most importantly, it has put all taekwondo training equipment out of use. For those who don't know, training for competitive sparring taekwondo relies heavily on the use of mits, bags, shields, guards and electronic scoring systems, all which have been engulfed by the fire.
With nationals only a week away from now, students who are representing Victoria and those who will represent Australia later this year will temporarily have to put a pause on their training as there is simply no place or equipment to continue.
The staff are working hard to find another training centre that they can use but are also faced with a challenge as insurance can only cover up so much of the damage and the pricey equipment. Melbourne Taekwondo Centre has not only been an inspiration for kids and adults to learn to protect themselves, they have expanded their love for their job and sport to surrounding schools like Glen Waverley Secondary College, educating them on how to effectively defend themselves from threats and dangers.
I think that it is time to give back to the place which has constantly contributed to assisting the needs of the community. Together, let's help rebuild this place that their Chief Instructor, Grand Master Jack Rozinszky (9th Dan Black Belt) has spent so long constructing throughout his life.
