Melbourne and Etta were Canadian citizens who immigrated to Canada in 1964. After Melbourne retired from the Canadian Department of Defense in 2004, he began to build his family home in Jamaica for his children and grandchildren.
In December 2017, Melbourne and Etta's children and grandchildren came to Jamaica to spend Christmas and New Years with them, and five days later, they were targeted and brutally murdered. Jamaica, which has a population similar to Toronto, has already had 70 murders since the beginning of the 2018 year. As of today, Melbourne and Etta Flake's murder remains unsolved.
This fund was created in response to the many offers of people wanting to help the family. $13, 000.00 is needed immediately to cover the costs of shipping the bodies from Jamaica to Canada ($10, 000.00 will be eventually reimbursed by Global Affairs Canada).
The money collected in this donation fund will be used for funeral travel expenses, lodging and food for the children and immediate family members so they are able to attend their parents' and grandparents' funeral. Funds will also be used to cover shipping of the bodies and funeral costs not covered by Melbourne and Etta's insurance policy. Any additional donation funds in excess of $43, 000.00 will be used to continue the campaign to prevent, reduce and prosecute the number of murders of tourists and Foreign Nationals travelling to Jamaica.
Thank you for helping us make sure that Melbourne and Etta Flake's murder does not go unsolved.
The funds will be going into a TD Canada Trust Donation Account-Melbourne & Etta Flake Memorial Fund, managed by their daughter, Laverne Francis.
