Mekayla's Medical Expenses

Hi, I'm Bobby and this is my wife Mekayla. Over the past three years, we have been on a health journey that has taken many twists and turns as we've endeavored to get to the bottom of unexplainable health issues that have plagued Mekayla's body for much of her adult life. After working with a primary care physician and being referred to a GI specialist with no discernable progress, we made the decision to seek out other alternatives. We turned to a functional Nurse Practitioner. After extensive tests and a lot of trial and error, Mekayla was diagnosed with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) and Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS). In simple terms, Mekayla's body is not able to detoxify properly because of a genetic mutation. Her conditions cause chronic, and often debilitating, inflammation all over her body. She struggles with heat intolerance, intense digestive issues, brain fog and fatigue, and widespread allergic reactions on her skin. Throughout our process of working with a Nurse Practitioner, we have learned that Mekayla was exposed to black mold, and that has been a root cause of a lot of her flare-ups.

In April 2023, we made the decision to move from the Fresno area to San Luis Obispo as a last-ditch effort to help Mekayla find some normalcy in her health. The valley summers proved to be too hot for her. Our prayers were answered when we were able to find a job for both Mekayla and me, as well as a brand-new apartment (mold-free!), and a loving and supportive church family. We have seen dramatic improvements in Mekayla's overall health since moving here to SLO, and this is thanks largely to the tireless efforts of our devoted Nurse Practitioner, Julie Helm at Integra Health and Wellness in Fresno.

The beauty of functional medicine is that it is a patient-centered approach This has been exactly what Mekayla has needed to get to the bottom of her complex health issues. Unfortunately, functional medical care is not covered by conventional health insurance. We have had to pay all of the medical expenses out of pocket; totaling over $15,000. This doesn't include supplements, routine blood work, and other testing. We have been so blessed by the generosity of friends and family who have surrounded us with prayer, love, and financial support. It has truly made a difference in Mekayla's life!

Giving to this GoFundMe will help pay for another full year of treatment for Mekayla. This will include medical visits, supplements, and some of the testing needed to continue the progress that Mekayla has already made.
