My Renal Failure Story
I frequently went to see my Primary Care Physician. In 2009, she said my lab results showed that my kidneys were not working properly. She kept testing me and trying different medicines to help me get better kidney function. Well I went to visit her on Monday October 10,2011 and on that Friday October 14,2011 I was at DePaul hospital having my first treatment of dialysis. Yes my entire life changed in a matter of one week.
I went to the dialysis clinic that following Monday and that is where I was every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for 3 1/2 hours each day.
During this time, I had some good days while I had many bad ones. I was put on the kidney transplant list in December 2012. In October 2015, I went to the ER because I was experiencing a lot of pain in my side. Through a MRI, they found bleeding around my kidneys. For the next 5 months, they kept an eye on the bleeding to clear up. Meanwhile, the transplant center notified me that I was now at the top of the list and I could get a kidney any day.
When the bleeding cleared up, they saw a mass on my right kidney. The Dr. said I had to have surgery. On April 12,2016 my right kidney was removed. They did a biopsy on the mass once it was removed and found out it was cancer. They checked me thoroughly to make sure the cancer had not spread and it hadn't. The transplant center notified me that they were making me inactive because I had cancer. They said I had to be cancer free for 2 years before I can go back on the list.
After the diagnosis of cancer, I had a different outlook on life. I started the MBA program, joined church, got back involved in my sorority, started cooking again and got closer to my family. Those were major changes for me because when I was put on dialysis, I went into a deep depression. All I did was go to dialysis, sleep and go to work. I didn't have any energy to do anything. I stopped doing anything with my sorority. I didn't even tell many of my friends or family I was even on dialysis.
My husband, son, mother, father, mother in-law and father in-law were so encouraging during this time. They kept praying for me and telling me everything will be alright. I have believed in God my entire life, but here lately my faith has flourished. I know God is going to bring me out. My Bishop preached Sunday February 19, 2017 on the topic "Don't Quit Better is Coming." I now believe as Mary Mary says " I just can't give up now, I've come to far from where I started from. Nobody told me the road would be easy, and I don't believe he's brought me this far to leave me now."
In October 2018 I started doing home dialysis and in November 2018, I was informed that I am still cancer free and eligible to be put back on the transplant list. On February 16, 2019 I received a call that I was back active on the transplant list.
I was claiming that 2019 was my year for new beginnings. At New Testament Church on 12/31/18 at the countdown to the new year my Bishop Jerome Williams said that I was going to get a kidney that year. I received 4 phone calls from the hospital in 2019 but nothing came about. I know that the kidney is coming. 2020 is going to be a year of change for me. I claim that kidney in Jesus’s name.
The money collected will help me with bills associate with the transplant and post transplant. The transplant can cost between $238,000 to $278,000. Post transplant prescriptions that I will have to take for the rest of my life will cost roughly $700 a month.
I know that God didn’t bring me this far to leave me now.
