Hi all, thank you for visiting my fundraiser.
Firstly, let me introduce myself. I am Megan, pleased to meet you! I am a wife, a mother of 3 (9, 6 and 2), a type 1 Diabetic of 16 years and am living with end stage renal failure. I have been using peritoneal Dialysis for 18 months now.
My kidney failure has been the outcome of my last pregnancy. My obstetrician hospitalised me when I was 24 weeks pregnant and told me I was not leaving until my baby was born. Unfortunately I gained too much excess water (Drs estimated I had 20kgs of excess fluid when I gave birth). Which caused my blood pressure to spike dangerously high so at 26 weeks, my daughter was born to help stop my kidney damage. She weighed a crazy 670g. She spent an incredible 100 days in the neonatal intensive care unit - but she is well and that's all that matters now.
The high blood pressure from the declining kidney failure has also caused a detached retina and many bleeds in my eyes and in 2016 I underwent 5 surgeries to help restore my vision. I will most likely never see correctly out of my left eye and therefore, I do not drive anymore.
I am required to take medications to help with fluid build up, for blood pressure, to increase my hemoglobin. I am also only allowed to drink 1L a day Depending on my levels of fluid daily, will directly affect my blood pressure. My hemoglobin levels affect the oxygen and energy to my muscles and I find some days incredibly difficult to walk (particularly stairs and hills). This means I do not have the energy to play with my kids and cannot take them on excursions or anywhere they may run away from me as I simply cannot chase after them.
They also see Mummy nap a LOT! They must think I'm the most boring person ever! Insomnia is also an awful symptom of kidney failure, so I find I'm only operating from a few hours of broken sleep a day.
I am am thankful that the Dialysis I do is from home, however it requires me to be hooked up to a machine for 9 1/2 hours a night, so often I am in bed before they are!
Despite these issues, I am still incredibly positive and try my hardest to be there for anyone who needs it and somehow I still manage to hold down a full time job still!
Just this week, I have met the transplant team, where I hope to be able to have the incredible opportunity of a kidney and pancreas transplant!
As my transplant will be in Sydney, I will need to be there 5/6 weeks (as long as there are no complications) so this fundraiser is to help with any costs with travel, accomodation, medications and food while I am there and also because I will be out of work for 3 or so months, I will not have an income so it will also help provide my kids and husband for what they need while I am gone and possibly a trip to see me.
Thank you very much for reading only a part of my story
All funds I do not use in my recovery, I will be donating to Donate Life
