Bernie gives a young elected official like myself hope. I ran for office with a strong desire to represent “the people.” I ran as an Independent after the Democratic Party establishment chose an insider for the democratic ticket in the special election. We won, and two months later I would be getting tear gassed with my constituents after the non-indictment of Darren Wilson.

But standing with the people had consequences. The next election, 5 months later, we would be outspent 4-1 and subjected to a massive smear campaign. We persevered with 73% of the vote. Since then, I’ve aggressively fought for Civilian Oversight of police, a $15 minimum wage, to decrease the influence of lobbyists in politics, and against a massive corporate handout in the form of an NFL stadium—all the while engaging more citizens with each battle.

I took a risk being first elected official in the State to endorse Bernie. Now I’m asking you to let me take the fight of the people to the DNC to build a progressive party not reliant on corporate interests and whose foundation rests on racial and economic equity. The only interest I’ll be fighting for is ours!
