This is Megan, a beautiful young mom of two beautiful children, a loving wife to Cy and wrestling Mom to Cy’s Newberry College wrestling team.
In January of 2020, Megan started to feel under the weather. The pandemic hit before she had the chance to see her doctor. When she was finally able to see a doctor in the early summer, she learned that she had stage 4 Lymphoma.
After many delays related to outpatient restrictions associated with the pandemic, Megan was finally able to begin treatment for the malignancy in early fall. Due to a compromised immunity follow the oncology treatments and to keep her safe from Covid, Cy and Megan opted to cyberschool their children. Unfortunately, Megan did fall ill with Covid, which again delayed treatments. She recovered from Covid and she was able to resume treatments. In late fall, the oncologist realized that chemo was not benefiting and actually further hurting Megan, so they stopped treatment to re-evaluate and investigate other options. The hope was radiation therapy may slow the spread and growth. Before she could begin the new treatment, she was admitted to the hospital for what they initially diagnosed as pneumonia. Unfortunately, test results indicated that the cancer had spread and was now in her lungs.
The new diagnosis came at the end of wrestling season. While they thought that Megan might be near the end of her life, Cy’s wrestlers were progressing through the championship season. Megan, being a loving, selfless wife and wresting mom, told Cy that he needed to go to NCAA’s. He left, not knowing if she would make it through until he came home.
Megan began a new regime of chemo. She is now on heavy rounds of treatment, which consist of 5 days of 24-hour treatments. This is a risky treatment, but she must have it to fight this type of cancer.
As you can imagine, this treatment comes with a hefty price tag. Despite the college’s insurance not having a maximum life benefit, the insurance does not cover all the expenses of these lifesaving therapies. We are starting this fundraiser to help offset these uncovered expenses.
