Megan Needs Us: Cancer and Financial Strain

Donation protected
Dear friends, family, and kind strangers:

For the past six years, our beloved Megan has dealt with multiple occurrences of gallbladder cancer. While her gallbladder is long gone, the cancer remains. In August 2023, her cancer spread to her abdominal wall, cavity, and lymph nodes. Her most recent CT scan in November 2024 showed the cancer has now spread to her lungs and other lymph nodes.

My name is Jackie Hinrichsen, and I am one of Megan’s friends from college. I, along with two other of our friends, Amber Fry Keasling and Michelle Krieger Feit, are working to put together this fundraiser to help our dear friend. Rest assured that all funds will go directly to Megan and her family.

Since April, Megan has been unable to work. She had no income during the seven-month waiting period to receive disability benefits. Having gone through all their savings and some of her retirement funds, her family is currently facing immense financial burden.

The same week she found out her cancer had spread, Megan’s car broke down. The engine seized, and she may face either costly repairs or replacement so she has reliable transportation to take her son to and from school as well as her own appointments.

Her local hospital has been paying her insurance premiums but will only continue to do so if she is in active treatment there. They paid for December, but January is questionable. Her medical team is waiting for results of her biopsy to determine what treatment will look like for her. In the meantime, she is not currently in active treatment. If the hospital no longer pays her premium, this will then fall on her plate, which will further burden her family. When she does start treatment, she will need help paying her part of her medical bills until she reaches her out-of-pocket max.

Due to the complicated nature of her case, she will be seeking opinions at specialty hospitals and may not receive treatment at her local hospital. Thus, she will also need help paying for travel costs.

How You Can Help
We are setting a fundraising goal of $50,000 to cover:

  • The $17,000 in insurance premium payments she will have to pay until she qualifies for Medicare in two years.
  • Travel and lodging costs for visits and potential extended treatment stays at specialty hospitals.
  • Either major car repairs or the replacement of her vehicle, to be determined.
  • Out-of-pocket medical expenses for 2025.

Your donation—no matter the size—will make a world of difference. By contributing, you are helping Megan and her family focus on her health and recovery without the crushing weight of financial stress.
Any funds not used will be used to defray any unexpected needs, her eventual funeral, and or/her son’s college fund.
