A new leg for my brother
Donation protected
My father and oldest brother still live in Iraq. On December 9, 2016, my brother was walking to work when he was hit by a car that jumped the curb. He was thrown ten meters down the street and knocked unconscious with a severely hurt head and leg. Local doctors performed surgery on his leg but it turned gangrenous. The next day, while he was still unconscious, they had to amputate his lower right leg. When he woke up, his first words were, "Where is my leg?"
A week later he had another surgery to try to fix his pelvic bone. He was in the hospital for nearly a month and now he is home with his wife and 6-year old daughter. He is not able to return to his job as a doorman. He needs a prosthetic leg so he can try to have a normal life again. He will have to travel to Jordan for this kind of medical care. The leg itself will cost about $13,000 and they will also have to pay for his hospital stay and doctors' bills.
I came to the US eight years ago as a refugee and now I am a US citizen. I am very grateful to be here. There isn't any insurance in Iraq - everything is paid for with cash. The man who hit him was unlicensed and has no money; his family has no way to help mine with the medical bills. My brother is 30 years old and a wonderful man. Although I haven't been able to see him since I left Iraq, he calls me and FaceTimes me all the time. He is a very hard worker and always generous. He loves his family and adores his young daughter. She always asks her mom when her dad will get a new leg so they can run and play together. A month before this happened to him, he was taking care of a family of kittens whose mama had hurt her leg. I can't believe now he's the one who can't take care of his family.
We want to get him to Jordan to be fitted for a new leg as soon as possible. If you can help us, my family will be so grateful. One of my brothers has moved to Australia as a refugee and the other is living in Turkey and waiting to get asylum. I miss my family so much and it breaks my heart that I can't give my brother and sister-in-law and neice big hugs right now. Please help us take care of my wonderful brother. God bless you.
